Behind the Scenes of 'Mockingjay Part 1' With The Hunger Games Exclusive

The Hunger Games Exclusive Series 2 debuted today along with the Mockingjay Part 1 worldwide trailer. The new issue is packed with behind the scenes photos and exclusive interviews with the cast including Q & As with Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and Natalie Dormer, character close-ups of Boggs, Pollux, Castor and Messalla, and, of course, the epic new trailer (see it HERE).

There is far too much to post here but check out a couple of our favorite photos from the site, and some lovely quotes from Jennifer Lawrence:

Josh and Liam are my best friends. And we’ve got the best crew that we’ve known for years. I don’t have to be ‘on’ all the time in front of them because they feel like my family.”

Jennifer on what she kept as a memento from the set:

The bow! Our props master told me that he could get me a new one because they made a few of them. But I want the one that Katniss is using while we shoot. It’s all scratched up. That bow means a lot to me.

See it all at TheHungerGamesExclusive.com. And check out our gallery for more images from 'Mockingjay Part 1.'

Francis Lawrence Accepts our ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Earlier today Nina Jacobson, producer of The Hunger Games films, accepted our ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Nomination. I mean, how cool is that? Director Francis Lawrence had tweeted that he was in

but he came through with the video proof today:

Aww, Francis! We feel your pain.

He nominates Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and Sam Claflin for the challenge. What do you say boys?? From the looks of social media, you should get to those ice buckets asap.

And we'll be getting out our check books again. As promised, PanemPropaganda will make a donation for every cast and crew member that does the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge! Thanks Francis, and thanks to all of you that are supporting the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

And let's hear it for our Hunger Games team! Nina and Francis obviously didn't have to take the time to do this, but it's a lovely gesture to do for the tributes/Hunger Games fans. Thank you!

More 'Mockingjay' Details from Francis Lawrence and EW

Entertainment Weekly published a few more tidbits from their recent interview with Mockingjay director Francis Lawrence yesterday (see the scans of the Fall Movie Preview Issue HERE).

Having gone through the games one more time and having lost Peeta and having been run through the wringer, she’s even more damaged. So you find her in a more agitated place. She’s distraught, confused, angry.”

Collins’ final book presents a gritty narrative about Katniss’ role in the rebellion to overthrow the Capitol, with grim scenes of wartime brutality as the teen heroine struggles with the psychological consequences wrought by violence. But, says Lawrence, the upcoming installment won’t be entirely somber.

“There’s definitely some battles. There’s some of the first glimpses of real war in this movie. And the scale gets quite big,” he reveals. “There’s an atonal shift from some of the last movies, but they’re still very emotional, very sweeping, [on a] grand scale with some levity and humor.”

“Instead of changing the plot and changing characters what we did was have the opportunity to show scenes that could have been happening at different times in the book,” Lawrence says. “For us it’s world expansion instead of changing things. I think it’s exciting for the fan to see certain things. So we’ve been able to open the world up in this and see some new places. We get to see some new districts this time and the scope gets quite large.”

There’s also the addition of cast member Julianne Moore as rebel President Alma Coin, a character whose role has been expanded for the upcoming films. President Coin—who becomes reluctant allies with Katniss Everdeen in the rebellion’s efforts to overthrow President Snow—was written by author Suzanne Collins through Katniss’s perspective as narrator; she is perceived as ambitious and egotistical. But with Moore’s involvement, Lawrence says, the gray-haired politician’s role in his two-part finale has expanded significantly beyond her portrayal in the bestselling Hunger Games series..

“She actually sort of tracked us down and had an interest in the books through her kids,” Lawrence says. "She didn’t audition. Once we knew she wanted it, that was it—done,” Lawrence says, laughing. “I sat down with her, she had great ideas, we got along and that was it.”

“What’s interesting is although she’s a huge character in Mockingjay the book, there’s actually very little of her in it,” notes Lawrence. “There’s more of her in this than in the book and because of that, there’s some development. I think the character has developed into something pretty amazing. And Julianne was a big part of that.”

But one thing thing that won’t change? That’d be the love triangle between Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), Gale (Liam Hemsworth), and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson).

“With Mockingjay – Part I it’s tricky because Peeta is out of reach for her,” notes the director. “Obviously he becomes an objective for her, but Gale is right there, so that’s always a tricky situation.”

While Lawrence won’t reveal how he divided the final book in Suzanne Collins’ trilogy (“That’s going to be one of the really good surprises,” he says), he shares that the films will have “two different, very distinct stories.”

“Those objectives became the motives for us,” Lawrence explains. “This is where the meaning of the entire series comes into play. The answer to why these books exist exists in Mockingjay, and that’s really been exciting to me. That’s been kind of what I’ve hung on to through these stories.”

'Mockingjay Part 1' Featured in Entertainment Weekly's Fall Movie Preview

Many thanks to QuarterQuell.org for the untagged still.

A new still of Katniss Everdeen and details on her grittier new appearance in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 are featured in Entertainment Weekly's latest Fall Movie Preview issue. EW talked with Francis Lawrence about Katniss' transition to reluctant rebel leader and some of the visual aspects of the film.

The digital issue has an interactive photo with additional details on Katniss and Mockingjay:

1. Melancholy Mood

Mockingjay introduces a more somber color palette in its new costumes and locales, including rebel headquarters in District 13. "You're sort of hit with the harsh reality of the consequences of war," director Francis Lawrence says.

2. Straight Shooter

After shooting the Hunger Games movies, Jennifer Lawrence has become quite the archer. She didn't have to practice too much says her director. True to Suzanne Collins' novel, it's Jeffrey Wright's Beetee who designs Katniss' new arrows with special explosive capabilities.

3. Combat-Ready

Katniss dons sleek body armour with protective boots, knee and elbow pads, and a tailor-made chest plate that sparkles with an iridescent indigo sheen recalling the feather-trimmed gown she wore in Catching Fire. "It's the warrior version of her mockingjay look," says the director.

4. A Rebel's Reminder

Katniss' trademark gold-plated mockingjay pin had been exchanged for a new black-on-black token. "Stylistically, this is something that Cinna designed for her before he was beaten in Catching Fire," Francis Lawrence says.

OK, who else is dying to get their hands on one of those matte black Mockingjay pins? Someone please make them immediately.

The digital issue is available now and the magazine hits newsstands Friday.

Many thanks to our friends at QuarterQuell.org for the larger and untagged version of the Katniss still at the top of the article!

Francis Lawrence Says 'Mockingjay' Will Wrap in 5 Days

Francis Lawrence announced via twitter that Mockingjay will wrap in 5 days. FIVE DAYS!! We are assuming that he means 5 business days and that they'll wrap on Friday, June 20th, but that's just a guess. Jeffrey Wright and producer Nina Jacobson chimed in about wrapping as well. And Jeffrey also tweeted about saying farewell to his character, Beetee.

Judging from YOUR reactions to this news on twitter, facebook and tumblr, we need a fandom group hug. Or a trailer, how about a trailer? That will fix us right up.

Jennifer, Francis, Josh & Liam thanks to http://staywithmealwayslove.tumblr.com/We're hearing a lot about the Mockingjay party at Cannes from those who attended the Lionsgate soiree on Saturday night.

Variety reports:

The hot ticket at the Cannes Film Festival was the Saturday night “Hunger Games” party hosted by Lionsgate that was such an extravaganza it would have made Jay Gatsby jealous.

A look at the new MJ pin thx to Total FilmAfter receiving a Mockingjay pin, guests were transported by buses to a sprawling $340 million mansion in Antibes owned by a Russian oligarch. The property, located on the Mediterranean Sea, was prominently decorated with “Hunger Games” posters and logos, not to mention a staff in goth costumes from the film.

“This party is like the Capitol at its worst,” quipped Jennifer Lawrence. She spent most of the night in a VIP area with her co-stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, dancing and lip syncing to tunes from Missy Elliot and Whitney Houston.

Producer Nina Jacobson, who optioned the rights to the books from author Suzanne Collins, said the cast had just arrived from a month in Paris, where they had been concurrently filming Mockingjay: Parts 1 and 2.

'Mockingjay' Moving Back To Swan House + Last Chance Extras Casting

According to Access Atlanta, Mockingjay will return to The Swan House very soon to film additional scenes:

The historic building on the grounds of the Atlanta History Center was the site for a good bit of filming for "Catching Fire," the second in the "Hunger Games" series. Elaborate party scenes were filmed on the grounds and interior scenes were filmed in the dining room. An upstairs room served as President Snow's office.

The series finale, "Mockingjay," which will be split into two movies, returns in a few weeks. The Swan House staff is readying for the movie's return by emptying out the living room on the main level, close to the dining room.

Additionally, CLCasting, who have been doing most of the extras casting for Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2, have announced a "Last Chance" opportunity for casting in the "Untitled Trilogy" (which we all know is MJ). The types they need are things like "GREAT LOOKING MEN AND WOMEN" for a "Mansion" scene, "Peacekeepers," and "Council Men and Women." All of these parts shoot between March 26th and April 17th, which is supposedly the last day of shooting in Atlanta.

Sounds like they could be shooting the scenes in Mockingjay where Katniss and Snow have their final confrontation in his quarters, where Katniss reaches City Circle and Snow Mansion, and maybe even you-know-what (major twist) scene on the front lawn of Snow Mansion.  And if you don't, go back and read Chapter 26.

Director Francis Lawrence talks about this particular scene in the Catching Fire filmmaker commentary:

"It was fun to design the entrance to [Snow's] house that will become key in the next movies, in Mockingjay. The entrance from the square - there's a big scene that takes place in Mockingjay right outside the house here."

Thanks to our friend strawberrycupcakeprincess for the tip!

'Catching Fire' Is The Biggest Digital Launch in Lionsgate's History

Congrats to Lionsgate on the huge success of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital HD! The company announced today that they sold an estimated 3.9 million DVD and Blu-Ray units in the first weekend, increasing almost 40% over The Hunger Games.

The press release:

Lionsgate (LGF), a leading global entertainment company, announced today that the global blockbuster Hunger Games franchise continued to gain momentum as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire sold an estimated 3.9 million DVD and Blu-ray units in its first weekend of North American release and had the biggest digital launch in the Company's history with opening weekend digital sales increasing nearly 40% over the first Hunger Games film.

The record digital performance was driven by #1 openings on all major digital platforms, including iTunes, Xbox, Amazon, Vudu, Comcast Xfinity, Verizon FiOS, Google Play and Sony Entertainment Network, among others. Higher-margin Blu-Ray titles surged to 50% of all packaged media sales of Catching Fire in its opening weekend compared to 35% of packaged media sales of the first Hunger Games film.

"This is a monster opening and a tremendous result for the second film in a franchise, underscoring the enormous momentum of The Hunger Games films," said Ron Schwartz , Lionsgate President and General Manager of Home Entertainment Sales & Distribution. "Opening weekend packaged media sales of Catching Fire were comparable to the first Hunger Games title released nearly two years ago while digital sales grew by nearly 40%. With strong increases in digital revenue and Blu-Ray accounting for 50% of packaged media sales, the opening weekend performance is driving significant margin growth and is a testament to the strength of the franchise."

"We opened Catching Fire on nearly 20 digital platforms, including six that have launched since the home entertainment debut of the first Hunger Games film in 2012, and it was number one on almost all of them," said Lionsgate President of Worldwide Television & Digital Distribution Jim Packer. "The broad demographic appeal of The Hunger Games franchise uniquely positions it for this surge in digital ownership."
