The Story Behind Katniss' Hunting Jacket From 'The Hunger Games' Costume Designer Judianna Makovsky

The Hunger Games Costume Designer Judianna Makovsky has some of her work on display at the Hollywood Costume Exhibition, opening October 2 at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles, which puts 150 legendary costumes on display. Makovsky sat down with Fast Company to talk about some of her work. She talked about something every superfan of The Hunger Games has probably wondered at some point: Why does Katniss' hunting jacket - supposedly a hand-me-down from her father - actually fit her perfectly? I admit it, I've wondered!

When we started designing Katniss’s hunting costume, we tried to follow the description in the book exactly. The book describes her jacket as her father’s old hunting jacket. We drew inspiration from American mining work clothes, and also looked at leather jackets from the ‘30s through the ‘50s. But the first jacket we made, from leather, really didn’t look good. Because it was meant to be her father’s, it was oversized, and way too big and bulky. It impeded her from shooting the arrow. So finally, after testing it out, I said, “I think we should make a jacket that actually fits her.” I knew superfans might be disappointed, but in a filmic, realistic sense, the oversized jacket just didn’t work.

TNT Secures Television Rights to 'The Hunger Games' Franchise

TNT recently secured the television rights to The Hunger Games and Divergent movie franchises in a deal with Lionsgate. Confused? Me too. We announced recently that ABC Family was to air The Hunger Games on network TV this October and had also secured the rights to air Catching Fire
The new deal with TNT gives them the right to air the movies after ABC Family's window. The Hunger Games will air on TNT in winter 2015, with Catching Fire following in winter 2016, Mockingjay Part 1 airing in 2017, and Part 2 in 2018.

The deal also includes network premiere windows for Divergent and sequel Insurgent, which hits theaters in March 2015, plus two additional follow-up films.

This deal comes into effect after the pay TV window for both franchises and ABC Family's airings. EPIX has first-run pay TV rights to The Hunger Games franchise, with the first film and Catching Fire currently available through Epix's cable channel, On Demand service, website and apps. HBO has first-run pay TV rights for the Divergent franchise.

So, basically, The Hunger Games franchise is popular enought that networks are buying and re-buying the rights to the franchise and it will be on television forever.

The Hunger Games airs on ABC Family October 10th, 11th and 12th at 8pm ET/PT.

The Hunger Games Trilogy Tops Amazon Kindle's Most-Highlighted Books and Passages

Conventionally, the most common way of gauging the most popular books in America has been looking at the New York Times' bestsellers list. But as we shift from reading on paper to screens, there's an interesting new option: Amazon's lists of the most-highlighted passages and most-highlighted books on Kindles around the world.

Amazon collects data on what its readers highlight most. The resulting most-highlighted lists are a fascinating record of reading as a whole.

Of the top 25 most-highlighted passages ever, a ridiculous 19 come from one of the books in the Hunger Games trilogy, including numbers 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Additionally, the three books rank as 3, 8, and 13 in the list of most-highlighted books of all time.

Image by Vox.comPart of this is simply due to the fact that Kindles have only become widely-used over the past few years, and The Hunger Games has been the most popular series during that time.

But the books' dominance in the rankings is still pretty amazing. The single most-highlighted passage, from Catching Fire ("Because sometimes things happen to people and they’re not equipped to deal with them.") was highlighted by 17784 Kindle users. No other passage from any book has gotten more than 9260 highlights.

Some of the 19 Hunger Games passages in the top 25 are important plot points, or are perhaps a little inspiring. But many are clearly there because they tap into adolescent ideas of romance.

The fifth-most highlighted passage of Kindle text of all time, for instance, highlighted by 8,500 readers, is

'I just want to spend every possible minute of the rest of my life with you,' Peeta replies."

Also interesting to note: When you take away The Hunger Games, the top 50 most-highlighted books include just eight other novels written since the start of the 20th century.

Thais Protest Coup With ‘Hunger Games’ Salute

Many people in Thailand are adopting a symbol of resistance from The Hunger Games to protest their loss of civil and political rights as a result of last month’s military coup. Thais are using the three-fingered “District 12” salute as “a symbolic act of peaceful defiance.” The country has banned gatherings of more than 5 people, and the Southeast Asian nation’s ruling junta is pondering whether to officially ban the salute from The Hunger Games, now that is has become an emotionally charged symbol of resistance.

From Time:

If life does imitate art, Thais may have reason to worry. The Southeast Asian nation’s ruling junta is pondering whether to officially ban the three-fingered “District 12” salute from The Hunger Games, now that is has become an emotionally charged symbol of resistance among opponents of the May 22 military coup.

Already, scores of those proffering the salute during weekend street protests have been dragged off by troops, in scenes eerily reminiscent of the Suzanne Collins novels and movie franchise, which depict a dystopian future society ruled by the totalitarian Panem regime.

Image by Manik Sethisuwan Thai army deputy spokesman Colonel Winthai Suwaree told the Bangkok Post that the military top brass are discussing how best to respond to the barbed gesture. “[The junta] must look at [the protester’s] intention, what they want to communicate and surrounding circumstances,” he said.

Over the weekend, the sight of unarmed and peaceful protesters being detained for flashing three fingers — including a woman dragged into a taxi by plainclothes police in tourist-thronged central Bangkok — did little to assuage fears of what the military may have in store.

Brad Adams, director of Human Rights Watch’s Asia division, calls the Hunger Games salute “a symbolic act of peaceful defiance” amid a situation that “is spiraling downwards in terms of rights abuses.”

“The fact that the [junta] is closing down sections of the city to chase a handful of protesters reveals a totalitarian mind-set that discounts respect for human rights as a hindrance, and sees youthful defiance as the enemy,” he said by email.

Lionsgate To Launch Interactive "The Hunger Games: The Exhibition" In Summer 2015

Lionsgate will launch a U.S. tour of “The Hunger Games: The Exhibition” in summer 2015, it was announced today by Lionsgate Chief Marketing Officer Tim Palen. The state-of-the-art exhibition, which will include interactive displays of authentic costumes, props and other elements of the world of The Hunger Games, will be designed in conjunction with Thinkwell Group, one of the world’s leading theme park and location-based entertainment companies. (Thinkwell are the people behind The Making of Harry Potter Studio Tour outside London, which is pretty impressive if you haven't seen it.)

“The Hunger Games: The Exhibition” will launch several months ahead of the November 20, 2015 worldwide release of the fourth Hunger Games film, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, and will incorporate artifacts featured in the first three films from locations within the Capitol and the various Districts of Panem. The exhibition will be featured in major museums and institutions across the country and will be supported by a multimedia promotional effort and nationwide advance ticket sales.

“Now that we’ve built a critical mass of intellectual property, we’re committed to extending our brands into exciting new businesses that create opportunities for our fans to engage with our properties at the same time they deliver significant incremental financial benefits to Lionsgate,” said Palen. “We’re thrilled to launch this initiative with the U.S. tour of The Hunger Games exhibition, which celebrates the world of The Hunger Games and offers Hunger Games fans an extensive behind-the-scenes look at the movie-making process.” He noted that the exhibits will also be paired with local school curricula, and nearly all aspects of the tour will be interactive.

Palen also announced that, as part of the studio’s commitment to expand its branded retail and merchandising operations, it has brought veteran Thinkwell executive Jenefer Brown in-house, naming her to the newly created post of Senior Vice President, Branded Attractions. Brown will not only oversee the launch of the U.S. tour of The Hunger Games exhibition but will explore additional theme park attraction and other location-based entertainment opportunities around the world for The Hunger Games franchise and the Company’s entire portfolio of branded properties.

When we checked out the auction they had lots of little items like tees, Capitol citizens' hats and ties, etc, but nothing too impressive had been listed yet. Hunger Games Theme Parks a Possibility

Yeah, it's all over the news today: Hunger Games theme parks are being discussed. According to Variety, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer made the disclosure Friday during a conference call with analysts following release of the studio’s quarterly earnings report.

Feltheimer said Lionsgate had been approached about Hunger Games theme parks in two territories and was considering those possibilities. He gave no further details.

The CEO’s disclosure came in response to an analyst question about which areas of Hunger Games merchandising had performed well. Motion Picture Group Co-Chairman Rob Friedman had said that Lionsgate was “very excited” by sales of the “Capitol Couture” line of attire.

What do YOU think? Would you go to a Hunger Games theme park?

Katniss Everdeen Among Time's Magazine's 10 Terrific Teen Heroines

Time magazine has compiled a list of their Top 10 Teen Heroines on film and, no surprise to us, Katniss Everdeen was among them. From Time:

Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence)

You’d think the Team Edward vs. Team Jacob debate would have given way to Team Bella vs. Team Katniss. After all, the Twilight heroine has now been supplanted in the popular imagination of young readers and moviegoers by the forest gladiator of Suzanne Collins’ trilogy. It’s probably not a fair comparison. Still, Lawrence’s dynamic warrior seems to have a built-in edge over Kristen Stewart’s passive, curiously blank vampire bride.

Katniss is not only a skilled fighter, but she’s also a canny manipulator – of potential beau Peeta, of the bread-and-circuses media, and even of the politicians of Panem. She’s selfless and compassionate, whether she’s taking her kid sister’s place as a draftee or mercy-killing a wounded opponent. Still, she’s only 16 and doesn’t yet know her own heart, which makes her flawed enough to be relatable.

Where did Lawrence get the steely resolve needed to play her? (Her Oscar-nominated performance as a teen protecting her rural family from scary meth dealers in Winter’s Bone offers a clue.) Her Katniss may display a hint of liquid-eyed guilt or remorse at having to take an enemy down, but she’ll still do it, quick as an arrow.

'Catching Fire' Could Gross More Than 900 Million Worldwide

Variety reports that one industry analyst predicts Catching Fire will gross $900 million worldwide. This is also boosting Lionsgate's stock to an all time high.

Piper Jaffray said Tuesday it recommended the stock as its favorite mid-cap name in 2013 and singled out Catching Fire, due out Nov. 22.

“While the second Hunger Games film is an obvious catalyst, we see a number of other interesting initiatives across the company that will drive value,” analyst James Marsh wrote. “The film release slate is looking deeper (Red 2, Ender’s Game, Divergent), we like the odds of a Twilight extension, and international distribution deal economics are improving.

David Miller of BRiley & Co. issued a similarly bullish report and repeated his $34 target, predicting that Catching Fire will gross $900 million worldwide. That’s 22% above the $691 million gross for The Hunger Games, will Miller noting that the popularity of the Hunger Games book trilogy has “exploded” overseas since last year’s release of the first film.

Coming Soon: 'The Starving Games' Parodies 'The Hunger Games'

The very first trailer (plus poster & images) for The Starving Games aka The Hunger Games spoof has arrived. And they're not just making fun of Suzanne Collins’ Panem. They mess with The Expendables, The Avengers, Sherlock Holmes and even with Harry Potter in this one.

Written and directed by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the guys behind parodies Vampire's Suck, Meet The Spartans, and Date Movie, the movie is the story of "When lithe and fearless Kantmiss Evershot (a dead ringer for Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers to take part in the winner-takes-all STARVING GAMES, she takes on a whole lot more than we could ever have bargained for…. including Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes and The Avengers."

Take a look at the trailer:

"Good morning hungry citizens of District 12! Don’t forget today is the Gathering Ceremony, so parents please bring your beloved children to the square for a random death lottery.”
