Elizabeth Banks Says Goodbye to Effie and The Hunger Games: "I Cried My Eyes Out"

Josh Horowitz got to spend a little time with Elizabeth Banks at Tiff while she was promoting her film Love and Mercy and, excellent fanboy that he is, Josh asked about Mockingjay wrapping up for good.

"It's done. I never get to play that role again, it's so sad. I cried my eyes out. I love, love, love Effie so much. I really love her and, yeah, it's over."

Horowitz said he was relieved that we get to see a little bit more of Effie in the last two films than the book would dictate. Banks replied, "They did [write a little bit more of Effie into the films]. I got lucky. It was VERY flattering and fun story for her actually. REALLY fun. To go from The Capitol to District 13 is a shock for anybody. I like how I talk about it like it's real life. (laughs) Anyway, she's there. She's the fish out of water. It's fun."

Elizabeth Banks on Effie and Mockingjay: "It's a True Action Movie"

Elizabeth Banks has been making the rounds to promote her involvement with Doritos Crash The Super Bowl Contest. E Online got a little bit of Mockingjay Part 1 and Effie information out of her during their recent interview.

How Effie maintains her style in District 13

“Effie really is a fish out of water in District 13 and they do not have anywhere near the resources that the Capitol does. So Effie really finds herself having to what I like to call ‘Project Runway her way’ through the wardrobe that’s given to everyone. Everyone gets sort of standard wardrobe in District 13 and she of course has to put her own twist on everything…she can make anything fabulous."

Book vs. Movie Effie

“Well she [Effie] doesn’t make an appearance in District 13 in the actual book, but Suzanne Collins and Francis [Lawrence] and I…everyone sort of came to me and said ‘We really feel like Effie…it would be really fun to keep her involved in the story’ and of course I’m thrilled to be a part of it and get to go to 13 and take care of Katniss a little bit longer.”

What she thinks of the film (aka press kit sound bites)

“I’m really thrilled with the way it’s turned out. I think Francis [the director] has a really interesting take on the material and it’s a continuation of the story of Katniss and she’s one of my favorite heroines of all time. The scope and scale is huge. It’s really a true action film now, we’re not just in the Games anymore, we’ve really upped the stakes of the movie. It’s really about a full scale rebellion and a war between the Capitol and the Districts. So all the action sequences are just amazing and upgraded…action-movie level stuff going on, not just the story of a small-town girl.”

Elizabeth on the Mockingjay cast

“I mean we really have a lot of comradery. We’ve been through a lot making the movies. It’s very rare in this business that you get to spend this much time with the same people, over and over again on something that we all care about a lot. And we really want to make a great product every time and we want to have fun while we do it and we just have really great shared perspective on the whole thing."

New 'Mockingjay Part 1' District 13 Citizen Posters

We're getting an earlier than expected look at six new Mockingjay Part 1 District 13 character posters. President Coin, Haymitch Abernathy, Beetee Latier, Effie Trinket, Plutarch Heavensbee and Finnick Odair are featured in their District 13 finest. And by finest we mean their drab grey uniforms. Looks like Effie is making the most of what she's been dealt in 13. You go, Effie.

The posters debuted on various websites tonight after they were leaked a bit early online right after the District 13 mobile site launch

We assume this is the first wave of District 13 citizen posters and we're very excited to see Katniss in one of them, hopefully in the near future. Because District 13 is alive and well and so is the Mockingjay.

Effie Trinket Cosplayer Surprises Kids at Mississippi School

All photos CHRISTOPHER BOSTICK/SUN HERALD

It's been a LOOONG time, but I don't remember my elementary school doing anything this cool. Ocean Springs Upper Elementary in Ocean Springs, MS invited the cosplaying father/daughter team of Jeff and Cami Roebuck to the school Friday dressed as Marvel Comics' Agent Phil Coulson and The Hunger Games' Effie Trinket (in an amazing replica of the butterfly dress from Catching Fire) to promote Free Comic Book Day at 3 Alarm Comics, a local comic book store.

During the annual event on the first Saturday of May, the local comic book industry comes together and gives away comic books to help promote literacy. "Every year, I get to talk about Free Comic Book Day on the announcement," assistant teacher Jason Quaregna said, "and (this year I) wanted to one-up it. So we brought the cosplayers in and the kids got really excited to see it."

"I love making stuff like this," said Jeff Roebuck of MoodHairCosplay, who was dressed as Coulson with a homemade gun prop in hand and a S.H.I.E.L.D. ID badge from the movie. "But the icing on the cake is going out and watching people freak out."

And freak out the students did. The cosplayers conducted a "Hunger Games"-style reaping, and the students received free comic books as their names were drawn. They got to ask the cosplayers questions, then to visit with them during lunch.

"I could feel the students' excitement when Effie came in. You could hear the students' gasps and I think it's just wonderful because it brought the films alive." said Carla McCaleb, assistant principal and sixth-grade administrator.

The Roebucks are no strangers to cosplaying. The veteran family's passion for bringing characters to life has taken them to several comics conventions where they've dressed as many colorful characters.

"I've been cosplaying since I was 7," said Cami, dressed head to toe in a butterfly outfit inspired by The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Cami even won First Place (as Effie, natch) in The Hunger Games DVD release costume contest.

Elizabeth Banks Wraps Up Playing Effie and Says, "That Was Heartbreaking For Me"

Elizabeth Banks as Effie. Photo courtesy Vanity Fair Oct '13Elizabeth Banks said in a recent article,

“I just wrapped playing Effie Trinket and that was heartbreaking for me. She was one of my all-time-favourite characters that I’ve played.”

Elizabeth is out promoting her new movie, Walk of Shame (in theaters May 2nd) and, of course, EVERYONE asks her about The Hunger Games

Fans (including this fan) are speculating (hopefully) whether Effie's part in the Mockingjay films is expanded from the tiny part her character played in the final book.

Elizabeth Banks Talks Jennifer Lawrence & Playing Effie "She's One of My All Time Favorites"

Elizabeth Banks is currently supporting The Listerine 21 Day Challenge, which supports Oral Health America’s Smiles Across America program in their goal of connecting at-risk children with needed access to oral care. She snapped her own “Swish Selfie” on the red carpet at the launch of the challenge on Thursday to trigger an immediate donation of $21,000 to Oral Health America.

Talk at the Los Angeles event inevitably turned to Jennifer Lawrence, Mockingjay and Philip Seymour Hoffman:

So, speaking of things that ladies love, give us some inside scoop about hanging with JLaw?
Well, recently everyone surprised me on the set of Mockingjay with a birthday cake! That was really fun. And, of course, the first person to delve into my cake was Jennifer. I will say she’s a girl who likes to eat and I love that about her.

As far as the Hunger Games go, are there any surprises hardcore fans of the book won’t see coming?
Honestly, I can’t say anything about Mockingjay! Ahhh!! We’ll both end up hurt somewhere! I think the hardcore fans can expect exactly what both The Hunger Games and Catching Fire delivered, Mockingjay is going to be as faithful a rendition of Suzanne’s Collins’s world and books and characters as we can put out!

“I am almost done,” she said. “I’m going to miss playing Effie, she’s one of my all-time favorite characters. I have such a ball with her & this cast & I will miss it. It’s absorbing because we still put the movies out so we’ll still have our little reunions, which I’m looking forward to. I have two more years of getting reunited with all these wonderful people!”

And what was it like to work with Philip Seymour Hoffman?
I’d really rather not discuss it. He was an incredible actor that I respected greatly and I will miss tremendously.

The Woman Behind Effie's Wildest Wigs Spills 'Catching Fire' Details

You've probably never heard of Alabama hairstylist Ann Bray, unless you follow the wild world of hair shows. She’s been in the business for 54 years, and is the first American to win the World Championship of Hairdressing. She was even knighted by the Intercoiffure in Paris for her international accomplishments (yes, that's a real thing.) But what caught Catching Fire Hair Department Head, Linda Flowers' attention was The Golden Rose, a hairdo that Bray came up with using a model's real hair. Flowers felt the 'do would be a perfect fit for Effie Trinket, and asked Ann Bray to join the Catching Fire team. AL.com talked with Bray about her experiences on the set:

Ann Bray and daughter Shelby Zimmerman with Effie's golden rose wig. Photo by Matt Wake. Ann Bray thought it was a joke at first when Catching Fire hair department head Linda Flowers contacted her about working on the sequel to the 2012 blockbuster The Hunger Games.

"I said, 'Come on," Bray says. On a recent afternoon, she's seated near a row of Belvedere chairs inside Huntsville salon The Masters, which she opened in 1974.

"And they said, 'We're serious.' So I talked with them about it. They sent me a story board of what they wanted to do, and I think all but three things were photos they'd collected of mine throughout the magazines. It was really wild. That was really how it came about, through this one photo, because this rose went viral."

Ah yes, the rose.

An image of Bray's "golden rose" hair design, shot during a session with photographer Luis Alvarez, had caught Flowers' eye. Actress Elizabeth Banks can be seen wearing the post-modern style in her role as larger-than-life character Effie Trinket, in Catching Fire.

The otherworldly hairdo is aptly named. While she fashioned a golden rose wig for Catching Fire, the style captured in the Alvarez photo featured a model's actual hair. "It takes a long time," Bray says of that original 'do. "I can do the actual rose easily in an hour, but to do all the prep work on it you're talking a couple of weeks because the hair has to be processed a certain way. It has to be built a certain way."

Asked what it was like to work so closely with a star of Banks' wattage, Bray fondly recalls Banks hanging out during lunch, "standing in line with the crew and wearing  her little cut-off jeans with holes in them and her little tied-up shirt."

Then Banks sat down for lunch with Bray and Bray's daughter Shelby Zimmerman, who also worked on the Catching Fire hair team.  "We had a good ol' time. She's very, very nice and outgoing," Bray says. Banks signed the pink-pages of an autograph book Bray brought to the set "Ann, stay happy. You rock. XOXO Elizabeth Banks Effie".

Bray describes the Catching Fire set as "very secret' before recalling a scenario in which a Lionsgate helicopter was used to chase off a paparazzi helicopter hovering over leading lady Jennifer Lawrence.

Lawrence's autograph in Bray's souvenir book is a little more business-like, although her bubbly-shaped handwriting is very reminiscent of an average schoolgirl's yearbook scribble. Bray remembers Lawrence being "very wonderful, beautiful and sweet" on-set. "One day there was an older car that pulled up (on set), not a raggedy car but nothing you expect a star to be in, and it was Jennifer. So they could take her back and forth from the hotel without being seen."

Sometimes the extras weren't too fond of their wild hair designs. "If [one of the extras] had their hair done the day before, they kept a little picture in a file, and they brought the picture back to you and you're supposed redo whatever was done the day before, because it might be a different stylist working on you. Some of those girls didn't like what they wore the day before and they tried to sneak in and do something really different, and they got busted a few times, some of the extras."

Bray's work on Catching Fire actually began a few months before film began shooting. She was flown out to Los Angeles to instruct other hairstylists on the avant-garde looks for the film and also to lead advance preparation of hairpieces. Bray estimates the Catching Fire hairstylists used about 500 wigs and hairpieces on the movie, most of which was filmed in Atlanta, except for the jungle scenes which were shot in Hawaii.

When filming began around fall 2012, there would be anywhere from 20 to 65 hairstylists on-set working on Catching Fire. While the hairstylists would never work for more than eight hours straight, sometimes the day began at 2 a.m. - if that's the light the director and cinematographer were looking for. A bus would pick the stylists up and take them to locations such as Atlanta's historical district or a racetrack outside the city, where the Catching Fire chariot scenes were filmed.

Bray recently received a text from Flowers asking about her working on another genre film, although she hasn't been told the project's title yet. She's also considering an opportunity to train film hairstylists, and hoping to work on the final installments of The Hunger Games, MockingjayParts 1 & 2.

Thanks to HGGirlonFire for the tip!

Elizabeth Banks Talks About Jennifer Lawrence and Being ON THE MOCKINGJAY SET!

Elizaeth Banks at Sundance. Portrait thanks to EW E!Online spoke with Elizabeth Banks at Sundance while she was promoting her film, Little Accidents, and they asked her about co-star Jennifer Lawrence. We LOVE Jen, obviously, but don't you think her co-stars get a little sick of having their entire interviews be about someone else? Anyhoo, Liz gave up one little tidbit that is still FREAKING me out (in a good way). She's in Mockingjay Part 1.

"Yes, I was on [the Mockingjay] set the Thursday she was nominated," Banks dished to E! News at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival junket for her film Little Accidents sponsored by Chase Sapphire on Main at the Nintendo Chalet. "We all kid with her more than anything."

Banks, who also called J.Law's second Oscar nomination for American Hustle "pretty cool," continued, "A lot of poking fun at her. She can handle it, which is a lovely quality of hers."

So what's the craziest thing Banks has ever seen Lawrence do?

"I could never repeat the craziest," she said. "She'd get in a lot of trouble."

"We don't give away all of our set secrets," Banks said, adding of Lawrence, "She is exactly what people hope that she is, which is really fun, easygoing gal you'd want to hang out with. You definitely want to have a beer with her."

See the video HERE

Yeah, yeah, Jennifer Lawrence, blah, blah we love her but - GUYS!! Elizabeth Banks was on the Mockingjay set which means Effie is really in the movie. She's not listed on the IMDB page for Mockingjay Part 1 but now we know she's in the film!

Elizabeth Banks Improvised Your Favorite Lines in 'Catching Fire'

Some of the best lines in Catching Fire are uttered by the incredible Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket. She provides much needed comic relief in the film, and some of the most heart-wrenching emotional moments as well. So we were thrilled to hear that Elizabeth actually improvised most of those hilarious one-liners, and fought for them to be included in the movie for the sake of the fans. Read her interview with MTV for more:

While the wild wigs, costume and makeup that make Banks nearly unrecognizable go a long way to building the memorable character, it turns out that the actress herself came up with several shout-outs and lines that will undoubtedly further cement Effie's place as a fan favorite.

For example, remember the best line of the first movie? Of course you do:

In Catching Fire, Banks managed a sly wink at the infamous quote while offering a running commentary on the Capitol landmarks she's walking Katniss and Peeta through: "The library, all mahogany."

"I brought that back, I threw it in there," she said of the line, which was unscripted. "I did it, and Francis called cut, and I went over to him, and said, 'You have to keep that in the movie, because the fans will go bananas.' " (We DID!)

Lawrence left it in and the fans did indeed go bananas, if exclamation point-filled Tumblr reactions are any evidence. Banks didn't just put her own spin on hardwood references though. She also revealed that the "Ooh, curtains" comment about a fellow Capitol citizen's choice of accessory, as well as the memorably snapped "chins up, smiles on" tossed in the glum Katniss' direction were her ideas.

"I get to improv a lot with Effie, which is fun," she said. "There were really very few words scripted so I got to have fun with that sequence."

Costume Design In 'Catching Fire' - What The Well Dressed Warrior Wears

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire costume designer, Trish Summerville talked to The New York Times about her inspiration behind Katniss' and Effie's costumes in the movie. She also gives us some insight into how she designed Peeta's looks and, sigh, it's all for love:

Katniss Everdeen as fashion’s It Girl? That’s how the costume designer Trish Summerville imagined the teenage warrior portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire: As a previous victor, she must be camera-ready as Panem prepares for the 75th games.

“Considering how the Capitol and Panem ingest and digest capitalism and consumerism, and all the parties and galas they go to, they change fashions more quickly than each season,” she said.

Katniss’s outfits — gowns of feathers, accessories in rough-hewed fibers — indicate her ascent in the Capitol while evoking her home in the impoverished District 12. Her male comrades, Peeta and Finnick, received magnetic, matinee-idol looks. And dressing Effie Trinket required tapping Alexander McQueen and House of Worth for statement pieces, including shoes that forced Trinket literally to stay on her toes.

For her grand entrance to the 75th Hunger Games kickoff, Katniss dons a fantasy wedding dress by the Jakartan designer Tex Saverio — the one she might have worn had her nuptials to Peeta not been quashed by the games.

Illustration by Tex Saverio “I wanted to have a subliminal feel of flames and feathers to keep her the Girl on Fire while also representing the Mockingjay,” Ms. Summerville said. Mr. Saverio’s froth of layered organza features a flame-inspired silver corset and fabric peacock feathers sprouting at the waist. As Katniss twirls, the gown erupts, and an iridescent Mockingjay dress rises from the ash. Using images of a mockingbird, blue jay, pheasant and peacock, Ms. Summerville worked with an illustrator and graphic designer to create patterns of feathers and wings, which she then had printed on chiffon and built into the Mockingjay dress.

Katniss wears a one-shouldered, cowl-neck sweater vest, almost like a shield, over her father’s leather coat. The piece, made by Maria Dora, a Los Angeles knitwear designer, is meant to see Katniss through summer, spring and winter.

Murray Close/Lionsgate

“I wanted to bundle her up a bit and give her something that had a feel of the Capitol,” Ms. Summerville said, “but still with keeping in those nubby, big natural fibers — something, say, her mom could have made for her.” Like a security blanket, the piece accompanies Katniss on her hunting expeditions and even to bed on the Victory Tour. “It’s trying to marry both sides of her duality,” Ms. Summerville said, “having her heart at home but also fitting into the Capitol world without selling out.”

“This time around we made Peeta’s character much more masculine,” Ms. Summerville said. She laughed as she recounted meeting Josh Hutcherson, the actor who plays him, and saw how athletic he was.

“I was like, ‘We have to dude you up.' ” Using jackets and more structured pieces that amped up his already muscular physique, she accentuated his rapid maturation between the first and second films, and hinted at the emotional and sexual allure that drew Katniss to him initially. Ms. Summerville used a lot of subdued greens in Peeta’s wardrobe “because Katniss’s favorite color is green,” she said, “so subliminally, he’s always trying to woo her.” (!!!)

When the Capitol escort Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) returns to District 12 for the 75th reaping, she is adorned with monarch butterflies — on her dress, an actual Alexander McQueen couture design; her hair; even her eyelashes.

“In her mind, it’s springtime,” Ms. Summerville said. “Her chrysalis has turned into this butterfly, she gets to come out again, she gets to see the kids.” She wanted Effie to look uncomfortable. “I think it’s her penance to herself,” she said, explaining that Effie loves all the grandeur, but that “she’s also really conflicted about her role in calling the kids up for the reapings.” Effie’s waist is cinched a little too tightly, her heels are a little too high, and her clothes are nearly impossible to sit in.
