Willow Shields on Jennifer Lawrence, "She really is like a sister to me."

Willow Shields spoke with InStyle.com about her Hunger Games on-screen sister and real-life friend and confidant, Jennifer Lawrence.

“She’s done a great job of supporting me in a way that helps to keep my life balanced while staying grounded like she is,” Shields says. “Jen has an Oscar and she’s one of the most famous people in the world, but she’s still super humble and down to earth. She’s really taught me to stay that way.”

Jen has also set an example for Willow with her focused work ethic. “People always talk about how Jen’s so funny, and she is. She lightens the serious on-set mood in a great way,” Shields says. “But they don’t see the fact that when they say ‘action,’ she’s serious about her work and portraying her character the right way. I love that about her—it’s inspiring that she can balance having fun on set while also being serious.”

Their already close bond strengthened during Mockingjay filming “She really is like a sister to me, and when my mom’s not traveling with me, she’s like a mom to me,” Shields says. “She’s so protective over me, and somehow we’ve become even closer while filming Mockingjay, which I didn’t know was possible!”

Willow also found out that there are LOTS of Hunger Games fans in New York, “I was walking around Lincoln Center, and people started yelling, ‘I volunteer as tribute!’"

Elizabeth Banks Says Goodbye to Effie and The Hunger Games: "I Cried My Eyes Out"

Josh Horowitz got to spend a little time with Elizabeth Banks at Tiff while she was promoting her film Love and Mercy and, excellent fanboy that he is, Josh asked about Mockingjay wrapping up for good.

"It's done. I never get to play that role again, it's so sad. I cried my eyes out. I love, love, love Effie so much. I really love her and, yeah, it's over."

Horowitz said he was relieved that we get to see a little bit more of Effie in the last two films than the book would dictate. Banks replied, "They did [write a little bit more of Effie into the films]. I got lucky. It was VERY flattering and fun story for her actually. REALLY fun. To go from The Capitol to District 13 is a shock for anybody. I like how I talk about it like it's real life. (laughs) Anyway, she's there. She's the fish out of water. It's fun."

Sam Claflin On His Awkward Goodbye to 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay'

Sam Claflin has been promoting The Riot Club at the Toronto International Film Festival, but MTV's Josh Horowitz snuck in a couple of questions about The Hunger Games: Mockingjay (and that's why we love ya, Josh!)

“It was bizarre,” Claflin said. “I think I’d said goodbye, and done all my goodbyes, and I remember feeling a little sad and anxious, kind of going, I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself for the rest of my life, I’m never going to work again.”

But Claflin’s fears were put to rest, pretty much immediately.

“After I said the final goodbye, they go, oh actually we need you to come in tomorrow to fill in this pick up,” Claflin said. “So I saw everybody the next day, and then I sort of left, and kind of felt a little weird.”

To add to the awkwardness, Claflin also left a week early, before most of the stars had wrapped on the movie.

“I got out early and avoided the whole heartbreak,” Claflin told us. But he added, “It’s really sad.”

Elizabeth Banks on Effie and Mockingjay: "It's a True Action Movie"

Elizabeth Banks has been making the rounds to promote her involvement with Doritos Crash The Super Bowl Contest. E Online got a little bit of Mockingjay Part 1 and Effie information out of her during their recent interview.

How Effie maintains her style in District 13

“Effie really is a fish out of water in District 13 and they do not have anywhere near the resources that the Capitol does. So Effie really finds herself having to what I like to call ‘Project Runway her way’ through the wardrobe that’s given to everyone. Everyone gets sort of standard wardrobe in District 13 and she of course has to put her own twist on everything…she can make anything fabulous."

Book vs. Movie Effie

“Well she [Effie] doesn’t make an appearance in District 13 in the actual book, but Suzanne Collins and Francis [Lawrence] and I…everyone sort of came to me and said ‘We really feel like Effie…it would be really fun to keep her involved in the story’ and of course I’m thrilled to be a part of it and get to go to 13 and take care of Katniss a little bit longer.”

What she thinks of the film (aka press kit sound bites)

“I’m really thrilled with the way it’s turned out. I think Francis [the director] has a really interesting take on the material and it’s a continuation of the story of Katniss and she’s one of my favorite heroines of all time. The scope and scale is huge. It’s really a true action film now, we’re not just in the Games anymore, we’ve really upped the stakes of the movie. It’s really about a full scale rebellion and a war between the Capitol and the Districts. So all the action sequences are just amazing and upgraded…action-movie level stuff going on, not just the story of a small-town girl.”

Elizabeth on the Mockingjay cast

“I mean we really have a lot of comradery. We’ve been through a lot making the movies. It’s very rare in this business that you get to spend this much time with the same people, over and over again on something that we all care about a lot. And we really want to make a great product every time and we want to have fun while we do it and we just have really great shared perspective on the whole thing."

'Mockingjay Part 1,' Sam Claflin, and Julianne Moore in Empire's Winter Preview Issue

Sam Claflin and Julianne Moore talk Mockingjay Part 1 in the October issue of Empire Magazine. In Empire's Winter Preview Sam talks about living up to the first two Hunger Games films, while Julianne Moore remembers Philip Seymour Hoffman and says that Jennifer Lawrence is "very, very easy to love." There's also a small feature on Sam's upcoming film, The Riot Club.

Julianne Moore recently came full circle after filming a prominent role in the last installments of The Hunger Games - the fourthcoming two-parter Mockingjay - where she worked for a final time with the late Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Moore features as President Alma Coin, another high-profile co-star for Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss. "I did the bulk of my work on the film with Phil," she says, quietly. Hoffman was her friend and co-star from Boogie Nights, The Big Lebowski and Magnolia. "He had pretty much completed shooting, so I had done all my work with him..."Her voice trails off, a cue for Empire to move on.

She must've also enjoyed re-teaming with Hunger Games mainstay Woody Harrelson, we inquire (the two having worked together on The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio and the TV picture Game Change, where Moore played Sarah Palin)? "Oh yes," she coos. "It was great fun to be with Woody and sometimes you forgot you were in this dystopian fantasy. Then someone would walk by with half their head shaved and there would be weird things coming out of the back of them and you were like, 'Oh yeah, this is a fantasy movie!'"

Moore's route into The Hunger Games came, somewhat predictably, through her two children. She picked up her daughter's copy of the first book in the series while on holiday, when her kids were playing table tennis. "I thought it was great and my children love these books, so for them it is very exciting for me to be in the franchise. Generally, I make movies that they can't see! And they both love Jennifer Lawrence. She is very, very easy to love."

Thanks to Wired we've got our first look at the "Rebel Warriors" of Mockingjay Part 1. Check out members of Star Squad 451 in uniform with the awesome new black mockingjay symbol in the background. We can't wait to see Katniss' poster with those wings looking like they're coming out of her back  - now we see where that stylistic change Francis Lawrence talked about in EW is going. It will be the warrior version of the mockingjay dress Cinna created for Katniss in Catching Fire.

The "Rebel Warriors" posters feature Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne, Natalie Dormer as Cressida, Mahershala Ali as Boggs, Wes Chatham as Castor, Elden Henson as Pollux and Evan Ross as Messalla.

More 'Mockingjay' Details from Francis Lawrence and EW

Entertainment Weekly published a few more tidbits from their recent interview with Mockingjay director Francis Lawrence yesterday (see the scans of the Fall Movie Preview Issue HERE).

Having gone through the games one more time and having lost Peeta and having been run through the wringer, she’s even more damaged. So you find her in a more agitated place. She’s distraught, confused, angry.”

Collins’ final book presents a gritty narrative about Katniss’ role in the rebellion to overthrow the Capitol, with grim scenes of wartime brutality as the teen heroine struggles with the psychological consequences wrought by violence. But, says Lawrence, the upcoming installment won’t be entirely somber.

“There’s definitely some battles. There’s some of the first glimpses of real war in this movie. And the scale gets quite big,” he reveals. “There’s an atonal shift from some of the last movies, but they’re still very emotional, very sweeping, [on a] grand scale with some levity and humor.”

“Instead of changing the plot and changing characters what we did was have the opportunity to show scenes that could have been happening at different times in the book,” Lawrence says. “For us it’s world expansion instead of changing things. I think it’s exciting for the fan to see certain things. So we’ve been able to open the world up in this and see some new places. We get to see some new districts this time and the scope gets quite large.”

There’s also the addition of cast member Julianne Moore as rebel President Alma Coin, a character whose role has been expanded for the upcoming films. President Coin—who becomes reluctant allies with Katniss Everdeen in the rebellion’s efforts to overthrow President Snow—was written by author Suzanne Collins through Katniss’s perspective as narrator; she is perceived as ambitious and egotistical. But with Moore’s involvement, Lawrence says, the gray-haired politician’s role in his two-part finale has expanded significantly beyond her portrayal in the bestselling Hunger Games series..

“She actually sort of tracked us down and had an interest in the books through her kids,” Lawrence says. "She didn’t audition. Once we knew she wanted it, that was it—done,” Lawrence says, laughing. “I sat down with her, she had great ideas, we got along and that was it.”

“What’s interesting is although she’s a huge character in Mockingjay the book, there’s actually very little of her in it,” notes Lawrence. “There’s more of her in this than in the book and because of that, there’s some development. I think the character has developed into something pretty amazing. And Julianne was a big part of that.”

But one thing thing that won’t change? That’d be the love triangle between Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), Gale (Liam Hemsworth), and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson).

“With Mockingjay – Part I it’s tricky because Peeta is out of reach for her,” notes the director. “Obviously he becomes an objective for her, but Gale is right there, so that’s always a tricky situation.”

While Lawrence won’t reveal how he divided the final book in Suzanne Collins’ trilogy (“That’s going to be one of the really good surprises,” he says), he shares that the films will have “two different, very distinct stories.”

“Those objectives became the motives for us,” Lawrence explains. “This is where the meaning of the entire series comes into play. The answer to why these books exist exists in Mockingjay, and that’s really been exciting to me. That’s been kind of what I’ve hung on to through these stories.”

'Mockingjay Part 1' Featured in Entertainment Weekly's Fall Movie Preview

Many thanks to QuarterQuell.org for the untagged still.

A new still of Katniss Everdeen and details on her grittier new appearance in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 are featured in Entertainment Weekly's latest Fall Movie Preview issue. EW talked with Francis Lawrence about Katniss' transition to reluctant rebel leader and some of the visual aspects of the film.

The digital issue has an interactive photo with additional details on Katniss and Mockingjay:

1. Melancholy Mood

Mockingjay introduces a more somber color palette in its new costumes and locales, including rebel headquarters in District 13. "You're sort of hit with the harsh reality of the consequences of war," director Francis Lawrence says.

2. Straight Shooter

After shooting the Hunger Games movies, Jennifer Lawrence has become quite the archer. She didn't have to practice too much says her director. True to Suzanne Collins' novel, it's Jeffrey Wright's Beetee who designs Katniss' new arrows with special explosive capabilities.

3. Combat-Ready

Katniss dons sleek body armour with protective boots, knee and elbow pads, and a tailor-made chest plate that sparkles with an iridescent indigo sheen recalling the feather-trimmed gown she wore in Catching Fire. "It's the warrior version of her mockingjay look," says the director.

4. A Rebel's Reminder

Katniss' trademark gold-plated mockingjay pin had been exchanged for a new black-on-black token. "Stylistically, this is something that Cinna designed for her before he was beaten in Catching Fire," Francis Lawrence says.

OK, who else is dying to get their hands on one of those matte black Mockingjay pins? Someone please make them immediately.

The digital issue is available now and the magazine hits newsstands Friday.

Many thanks to our friends at QuarterQuell.org for the larger and untagged version of the Katniss still at the top of the article!

New 'Mockingjay Part 1' District 13 Citizen Posters

We're getting an earlier than expected look at six new Mockingjay Part 1 District 13 character posters. President Coin, Haymitch Abernathy, Beetee Latier, Effie Trinket, Plutarch Heavensbee and Finnick Odair are featured in their District 13 finest. And by finest we mean their drab grey uniforms. Looks like Effie is making the most of what she's been dealt in 13. You go, Effie.

The posters debuted on various websites tonight after they were leaked a bit early online right after the District 13 mobile site launch

We assume this is the first wave of District 13 citizen posters and we're very excited to see Katniss in one of them, hopefully in the near future. Because District 13 is alive and well and so is the Mockingjay.

Lorde to Provide First Single and Curate the Soundtrack for 'Mockingjay Part 1'

Lionsgate announced today that multiplatinum GRAMMY Award-winning recording star Lorde will curate the soundtrack album for the upcoming third installment of The Hunger Games franchise, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1.  In addition to hand-picking the artists for The Mockingjay – Part 1 soundtrack, Lorde will provide the first single for the highly anticipated film and album.  The soundtrack will be available via Republic Records this fall.

Mockingjay director Francis Lawrence said of the collaboration:

I sat down with Lorde on the set of ‘Mockingjay’ this spring and I was immediately struck by how she so innately understood what we, as both fans and filmmakers, were trying to accomplish with the film. Her immense talent and keen understanding of Mockingjay’s characters and themes not only have enabled her to create a song of her own that completely captures the film’s essence, but her insight and passion for our project make her the perfect creative force to assemble the other songs on our soundtrack.  I can't wait to share what she's done with the fans -- it is truly remarkable.”

"Curating the soundtrack for such a hotly-anticipated film was a challenge, but I jumped at the chance,” said Lorde.  “The cast and story are an inspiration for all musicians participating and, as someone with cinematic leanings, being privy to a different creative process has been a unique experience. I think the soundtrack is definitely going to surprise people.”
