'Catching Fire' Is The Biggest Digital Launch in Lionsgate's History

Congrats to Lionsgate on the huge success of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital HD! The company announced today that they sold an estimated 3.9 million DVD and Blu-Ray units in the first weekend, increasing almost 40% over The Hunger Games.

The press release:

Lionsgate (LGF), a leading global entertainment company, announced today that the global blockbuster Hunger Games franchise continued to gain momentum as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire sold an estimated 3.9 million DVD and Blu-ray units in its first weekend of North American release and had the biggest digital launch in the Company's history with opening weekend digital sales increasing nearly 40% over the first Hunger Games film.

The record digital performance was driven by #1 openings on all major digital platforms, including iTunes, Xbox, Amazon, Vudu, Comcast Xfinity, Verizon FiOS, Google Play and Sony Entertainment Network, among others. Higher-margin Blu-Ray titles surged to 50% of all packaged media sales of Catching Fire in its opening weekend compared to 35% of packaged media sales of the first Hunger Games film.

"This is a monster opening and a tremendous result for the second film in a franchise, underscoring the enormous momentum of The Hunger Games films," said Ron Schwartz , Lionsgate President and General Manager of Home Entertainment Sales & Distribution. "Opening weekend packaged media sales of Catching Fire were comparable to the first Hunger Games title released nearly two years ago while digital sales grew by nearly 40%. With strong increases in digital revenue and Blu-Ray accounting for 50% of packaged media sales, the opening weekend performance is driving significant margin growth and is a testament to the strength of the franchise."

"We opened Catching Fire on nearly 20 digital platforms, including six that have launched since the home entertainment debut of the first Hunger Games film in 2012, and it was number one on almost all of them," said Lionsgate President of Worldwide Television & Digital Distribution Jim Packer. "The broad demographic appeal of The Hunger Games franchise uniquely positions it for this surge in digital ownership."

In the upcoming Catching Fire, Katniss returns for another fight to the death after her Hunger Games victory has sparked a rebellion in the Districts of Panem.

“She really is the reluctant hero,” Lawrence says of her character. “She’s brave, but she’s also scared, and she knows that things may wind up being far worse.”

On the set, the actress is anything but reluctant about returning to the role, despite the pressure of portraying a screen personality that’s become iconic. “I love being here,” she allows. “It’s like going back to school where it’s a really fun school.”

Jacobson, whose producing endeavors also include the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” films and the underperformer “One Day,” starring Anne Hathaway, appreciates the “just-folks” side of Lawrence — and Jacobson has worked with a lot of A-list stars during her years as a studio executive.

“She’s not a diva — she’s the anti-diva,” she says of Lawrence. “One of my favorite moments is where she has the wedding dress on for the interview (scene) in ‘Catching Fire.’ It’s a big cumbersome dress, and she fell down, so we played that over and over on the monitors. There’s such a lack of pretense with Jen; she’s more than happy to laugh at herself.”

US Weekly 'Catching Fire' Special Edition Scans

Thanks to lawrence-daily and strawberrycupcakeprincess on tumblr (thanks for the scans!), we can show you some peeks at the US Weekly Special Catching Fire Edition. The issue should hit November 1st, but it looks as though some people are getting their copies early. If you pre-ordered the issue on BN.com, keep an eye on your mailbox! We did, and we'll have the HQ scans for you as soon as we get the magazine- plus some issues to give away. We've lightened and sharpened them up as much as possible. Stay tuned for the HQ versions.

We're loving the pic of Johanna. We've heard there's something changing in the way they do the interview sequence with her, and this looks like it might be part of that moment. And Peeta being painted by the morphling?? I need to go lie down now.

More pics after the jump!

More From Entertainment Weekly's 'Catching Fire' Issue!

EW posted three new stills from their October 11 Catching Fire issue this morning. We've also got a preview of the story, with part of Jennifer Lawrence's interview below. Check out the 4 gorgeous different versions of the cover HERE

On her way to the podium to accept the award for Silver Linings Playbook, Jennifer Lawrence famously fell up the stairs—a moment which most Oscar bloggers regarded as the highlight of the evening.

"I'm not that upset by it," Lawrence reveals in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly. "I didn't expect to make it up the steps in a dress like that. It's just that the fall frazzled me so much that I forgot to thank the director [David O. Russell] and Harvey Weinstein. It'll get funny to me eventually. I'll get there."

As Lawrence tells it, there was just as much falling down on the set of Catching Fire as there was at the Oscars. "Let me tell you, Sam [Claflin, the actor who plays Finnick Odair] is the clumsiest, most accident-prone person in the world. He broke his hand within the first week. He walked into a twig, and his eye was bleeding. He fell every single scene."

Lawrence's co-star, Josh Hutcherson, was almost as bad. "The funniest thing that happened was when Josh got down on one knee to propose to me—and his pants ripped," Lawrence says.

As it happens, Lawrence's favourite memory from the Catching Fire shoot also involves falling down.nning until we fell, but we were all scared because we didn't know where the reef was because it was dar "In Hawaii one night, we were having a party at Josh's house and we all held hands and ran into the ocean," she says. "We would run as fast as we could into the water and we'd keep running until we fell, but we were all scared because we didn't know where the reef was because it was dark."

Elsewhere in the interview, Lawrence talks about her least favourite scene in the first Hunger Games movie (hint: it involves giant dogs), her most difficult scene in Catching Fire, working with Philip Seymour Hoffman, and the difficulty of saying goodbye.
