The Story Behind Katniss' Hunting Jacket From 'The Hunger Games' Costume Designer Judianna Makovsky

The Hunger Games Costume Designer Judianna Makovsky has some of her work on display at the Hollywood Costume Exhibition, opening October 2 at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles, which puts 150 legendary costumes on display. Makovsky sat down with Fast Company to talk about some of her work. She talked about something every superfan of The Hunger Games has probably wondered at some point: Why does Katniss' hunting jacket - supposedly a hand-me-down from her father - actually fit her perfectly? I admit it, I've wondered!

When we started designing Katniss’s hunting costume, we tried to follow the description in the book exactly. The book describes her jacket as her father’s old hunting jacket. We drew inspiration from American mining work clothes, and also looked at leather jackets from the ‘30s through the ‘50s. But the first jacket we made, from leather, really didn’t look good. Because it was meant to be her father’s, it was oversized, and way too big and bulky. It impeded her from shooting the arrow. So finally, after testing it out, I said, “I think we should make a jacket that actually fits her.” I knew superfans might be disappointed, but in a filmic, realistic sense, the oversized jacket just didn’t work.

More 'Mockingjay' Details from Francis Lawrence and EW

Entertainment Weekly published a few more tidbits from their recent interview with Mockingjay director Francis Lawrence yesterday (see the scans of the Fall Movie Preview Issue HERE).

Having gone through the games one more time and having lost Peeta and having been run through the wringer, she’s even more damaged. So you find her in a more agitated place. She’s distraught, confused, angry.”

Collins’ final book presents a gritty narrative about Katniss’ role in the rebellion to overthrow the Capitol, with grim scenes of wartime brutality as the teen heroine struggles with the psychological consequences wrought by violence. But, says Lawrence, the upcoming installment won’t be entirely somber.

“There’s definitely some battles. There’s some of the first glimpses of real war in this movie. And the scale gets quite big,” he reveals. “There’s an atonal shift from some of the last movies, but they’re still very emotional, very sweeping, [on a] grand scale with some levity and humor.”

“Instead of changing the plot and changing characters what we did was have the opportunity to show scenes that could have been happening at different times in the book,” Lawrence says. “For us it’s world expansion instead of changing things. I think it’s exciting for the fan to see certain things. So we’ve been able to open the world up in this and see some new places. We get to see some new districts this time and the scope gets quite large.”

There’s also the addition of cast member Julianne Moore as rebel President Alma Coin, a character whose role has been expanded for the upcoming films. President Coin—who becomes reluctant allies with Katniss Everdeen in the rebellion’s efforts to overthrow President Snow—was written by author Suzanne Collins through Katniss’s perspective as narrator; she is perceived as ambitious and egotistical. But with Moore’s involvement, Lawrence says, the gray-haired politician’s role in his two-part finale has expanded significantly beyond her portrayal in the bestselling Hunger Games series..

“She actually sort of tracked us down and had an interest in the books through her kids,” Lawrence says. "She didn’t audition. Once we knew she wanted it, that was it—done,” Lawrence says, laughing. “I sat down with her, she had great ideas, we got along and that was it.”

“What’s interesting is although she’s a huge character in Mockingjay the book, there’s actually very little of her in it,” notes Lawrence. “There’s more of her in this than in the book and because of that, there’s some development. I think the character has developed into something pretty amazing. And Julianne was a big part of that.”

But one thing thing that won’t change? That’d be the love triangle between Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), Gale (Liam Hemsworth), and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson).

“With Mockingjay – Part I it’s tricky because Peeta is out of reach for her,” notes the director. “Obviously he becomes an objective for her, but Gale is right there, so that’s always a tricky situation.”

While Lawrence won’t reveal how he divided the final book in Suzanne Collins’ trilogy (“That’s going to be one of the really good surprises,” he says), he shares that the films will have “two different, very distinct stories.”

“Those objectives became the motives for us,” Lawrence explains. “This is where the meaning of the entire series comes into play. The answer to why these books exist exists in Mockingjay, and that’s really been exciting to me. That’s been kind of what I’ve hung on to through these stories.”

'Mockingjay Part 1' Featured in Entertainment Weekly's Fall Movie Preview

Many thanks to QuarterQuell.org for the untagged still.

A new still of Katniss Everdeen and details on her grittier new appearance in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 are featured in Entertainment Weekly's latest Fall Movie Preview issue. EW talked with Francis Lawrence about Katniss' transition to reluctant rebel leader and some of the visual aspects of the film.

The digital issue has an interactive photo with additional details on Katniss and Mockingjay:

1. Melancholy Mood

Mockingjay introduces a more somber color palette in its new costumes and locales, including rebel headquarters in District 13. "You're sort of hit with the harsh reality of the consequences of war," director Francis Lawrence says.

2. Straight Shooter

After shooting the Hunger Games movies, Jennifer Lawrence has become quite the archer. She didn't have to practice too much says her director. True to Suzanne Collins' novel, it's Jeffrey Wright's Beetee who designs Katniss' new arrows with special explosive capabilities.

3. Combat-Ready

Katniss dons sleek body armour with protective boots, knee and elbow pads, and a tailor-made chest plate that sparkles with an iridescent indigo sheen recalling the feather-trimmed gown she wore in Catching Fire. "It's the warrior version of her mockingjay look," says the director.

4. A Rebel's Reminder

Katniss' trademark gold-plated mockingjay pin had been exchanged for a new black-on-black token. "Stylistically, this is something that Cinna designed for her before he was beaten in Catching Fire," Francis Lawrence says.

OK, who else is dying to get their hands on one of those matte black Mockingjay pins? Someone please make them immediately.

The digital issue is available now and the magazine hits newsstands Friday.

Many thanks to our friends at QuarterQuell.org for the larger and untagged version of the Katniss still at the top of the article!

Vote Katniss as Favorite Character in the 2014 MTV Movie Awards

Looks like MTV is throwing Katniss fans a bone by adding a new category to the MTV Movie Awards, Favorite Character. When the nominations for the MTV Movie Awards were announced, Catching Fire nabbed 7 of them, but we were all pretty surprised that Jennifer Lawrence hadn't been nominated as Best Hero for her performance as Katniss. There was even a very successful petition by Sophie Azran to get her added. Is this our compromise?

You can vote for Katniss in the new category Best Character HERE or vote with the hashtags #votekatniss on Twitter, Instagram and Vine. The best photos and videos from your social media will be featured on this page. The winner of this award will be announced on Sunday April 13th.

'Catching Fire' is The First Film With a Female Lead to Top the Box Office in 4 Decades

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has made history by becoming the first film with a solo-female lead to top the year end box office.

The movie made a massive $409.4 million, surpassing Iron Man 3, which earned $409 million through tickets sales, reports Huffington Post.

"The Hunger Games franchise continues to evolve into a truly global phenomenon," said Lionsgate Chief Executive Officer Jon Feltheimer in a statement.

"The success of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is a testament to the vision of author Suzanne Collins, the sure hand of director Francis Lawrence, the brilliant performances of a remarkably talented cast led by the amazing Jennifer Lawrence and superb execution by our motion picture production, marketing and distribution teams.

“We will continue to grow the transformative Hunger Games franchise in the years to come even as we continue to develop a dynamic portfolio of premium new brands."

Catching Fire is the first film in four decades to have a woman as a lead to finish top, the previous movie was 1973 thriller The Exorcist, with Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn in the leads.

Katniss is One of Time's 11 Most Influential Fictional Characters of 2013

TIME has named Katniss Everdeen among their list of the 11 most influential fictional characters of 2013.

From TIME:

Beyond leading Catching Fire to a gross of $600 million—and counting—the Hunger Games heroine (played by Jennifer Lawrence) is also inspiring several real-world product lines. Among them: the Nerf Rebelle line of guns, quivers and crossbows for girls, Lucas Hugh “Capitol Label” workout clothes, and a makeup line from CoverGirl.

We also think her demolishing gender biases and being a self-sacrificing, heroic every-woman revolutionary might have a wee bit to do with her overall influence. Go Katniss!

Costume Design In 'Catching Fire' - What The Well Dressed Warrior Wears

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire costume designer, Trish Summerville talked to The New York Times about her inspiration behind Katniss' and Effie's costumes in the movie. She also gives us some insight into how she designed Peeta's looks and, sigh, it's all for love:

Katniss Everdeen as fashion’s It Girl? That’s how the costume designer Trish Summerville imagined the teenage warrior portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire: As a previous victor, she must be camera-ready as Panem prepares for the 75th games.

“Considering how the Capitol and Panem ingest and digest capitalism and consumerism, and all the parties and galas they go to, they change fashions more quickly than each season,” she said.

Katniss’s outfits — gowns of feathers, accessories in rough-hewed fibers — indicate her ascent in the Capitol while evoking her home in the impoverished District 12. Her male comrades, Peeta and Finnick, received magnetic, matinee-idol looks. And dressing Effie Trinket required tapping Alexander McQueen and House of Worth for statement pieces, including shoes that forced Trinket literally to stay on her toes.

For her grand entrance to the 75th Hunger Games kickoff, Katniss dons a fantasy wedding dress by the Jakartan designer Tex Saverio — the one she might have worn had her nuptials to Peeta not been quashed by the games.

Illustration by Tex Saverio “I wanted to have a subliminal feel of flames and feathers to keep her the Girl on Fire while also representing the Mockingjay,” Ms. Summerville said. Mr. Saverio’s froth of layered organza features a flame-inspired silver corset and fabric peacock feathers sprouting at the waist. As Katniss twirls, the gown erupts, and an iridescent Mockingjay dress rises from the ash. Using images of a mockingbird, blue jay, pheasant and peacock, Ms. Summerville worked with an illustrator and graphic designer to create patterns of feathers and wings, which she then had printed on chiffon and built into the Mockingjay dress.

Katniss wears a one-shouldered, cowl-neck sweater vest, almost like a shield, over her father’s leather coat. The piece, made by Maria Dora, a Los Angeles knitwear designer, is meant to see Katniss through summer, spring and winter.

Murray Close/Lionsgate

“I wanted to bundle her up a bit and give her something that had a feel of the Capitol,” Ms. Summerville said, “but still with keeping in those nubby, big natural fibers — something, say, her mom could have made for her.” Like a security blanket, the piece accompanies Katniss on her hunting expeditions and even to bed on the Victory Tour. “It’s trying to marry both sides of her duality,” Ms. Summerville said, “having her heart at home but also fitting into the Capitol world without selling out.”

“This time around we made Peeta’s character much more masculine,” Ms. Summerville said. She laughed as she recounted meeting Josh Hutcherson, the actor who plays him, and saw how athletic he was.

“I was like, ‘We have to dude you up.' ” Using jackets and more structured pieces that amped up his already muscular physique, she accentuated his rapid maturation between the first and second films, and hinted at the emotional and sexual allure that drew Katniss to him initially. Ms. Summerville used a lot of subdued greens in Peeta’s wardrobe “because Katniss’s favorite color is green,” she said, “so subliminally, he’s always trying to woo her.” (!!!)

When the Capitol escort Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) returns to District 12 for the 75th reaping, she is adorned with monarch butterflies — on her dress, an actual Alexander McQueen couture design; her hair; even her eyelashes.

“In her mind, it’s springtime,” Ms. Summerville said. “Her chrysalis has turned into this butterfly, she gets to come out again, she gets to see the kids.” She wanted Effie to look uncomfortable. “I think it’s her penance to herself,” she said, explaining that Effie loves all the grandeur, but that “she’s also really conflicted about her role in calling the kids up for the reapings.” Effie’s waist is cinched a little too tightly, her heels are a little too high, and her clothes are nearly impossible to sit in.
