Catching Fire makes $800 million worldwide

According to Yahoo Movies UK, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has made a more than significant contribution to what seems a bumper year for Hollywood.

2013 will be the most successful in commercial terms for Hollywood in its entire history, with the takings in the United States alone exceeding any figure ever achieved. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has made a massive contribution to the roughly $11 billion worth of takings that Hollywood managed in 2013, the biggest in the history of cinema in the United States.

The second Hunger Games movie has been a significant part of this success story, with the US takings for the Francis Lawrence directed movie nearing $400 million. The film will finish 2013 as the second most successful movie of the year in commercial terms, and may yet top the $1 billion barrier worldwide which was considered an extremely optimistic and ambitious target for the movie.

Additionally, the performance of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire worldwide has been excellent, with the film penetrating major markets all over the globe. For example, it was announced this week that Catching Fire was the second most successful movie in Australia this year, just passing the third movie on the list, Despicable Me 2, with literally days left in the calendar year.

After initially experiencing something of a soft landing in the Far East, Catching Fire has also started to make good money in Japan, which has helped the movie exceed the $400 million in international takings, and the $800 million overall. Catching Fire remains in the top five or six movies in most countries in the world, showing that is has been an extremely durable performer.

With takings in Hollywood having sunk in recent years, the excellent takings from 2013 will be a great relief to studios who now have to compete with a multitude of other entertainment. With Catching Fire having done so well in 2013, it will be hoped that Mockingjay makes a similarly big splash next year.
