'Catching Fire' is The First Film With a Female Lead to Top the Box Office in 4 Decades

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has made history by becoming the first film with a solo-female lead to top the year end box office.

The movie made a massive $409.4 million, surpassing Iron Man 3, which earned $409 million through tickets sales, reports Huffington Post.

"The Hunger Games franchise continues to evolve into a truly global phenomenon," said Lionsgate Chief Executive Officer Jon Feltheimer in a statement.

"The success of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is a testament to the vision of author Suzanne Collins, the sure hand of director Francis Lawrence, the brilliant performances of a remarkably talented cast led by the amazing Jennifer Lawrence and superb execution by our motion picture production, marketing and distribution teams.

“We will continue to grow the transformative Hunger Games franchise in the years to come even as we continue to develop a dynamic portfolio of premium new brands."

Catching Fire is the first film in four decades to have a woman as a lead to finish top, the previous movie was 1973 thriller The Exorcist, with Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn in the leads.

Catching Fire Makes Massive Contribution to A Bumper Year For Hollywood

Catching Fire makes $800 million worldwide

According to Yahoo Movies UK, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has made a more than significant contribution to what seems a bumper year for Hollywood.

2013 will be the most successful in commercial terms for Hollywood in its entire history, with the takings in the United States alone exceeding any figure ever achieved. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has made a massive contribution to the roughly $11 billion worth of takings that Hollywood managed in 2013, the biggest in the history of cinema in the United States.

The second Hunger Games movie has been a significant part of this success story, with the US takings for the Francis Lawrence directed movie nearing $400 million. The film will finish 2013 as the second most successful movie of the year in commercial terms, and may yet top the $1 billion barrier worldwide which was considered an extremely optimistic and ambitious target for the movie.

Additionally, the performance of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire worldwide has been excellent, with the film penetrating major markets all over the globe. For example, it was announced this week that Catching Fire was the second most successful movie in Australia this year, just passing the third movie on the list, Despicable Me 2, with literally days left in the calendar year.

After initially experiencing something of a soft landing in the Far East, Catching Fire has also started to make good money in Japan, which has helped the movie exceed the $400 million in international takings, and the $800 million overall. Catching Fire remains in the top five or six movies in most countries in the world, showing that is has been an extremely durable performer.

With takings in Hollywood having sunk in recent years, the excellent takings from 2013 will be a great relief to studios who now have to compete with a multitude of other entertainment. With Catching Fire having done so well in 2013, it will be hoped that Mockingjay makes a similarly big splash next year.

'Catching Fire' Sets Thanksgiving Box Office Records

Americans went to the movies on Thanksgiving. Well, they went to TWO movies Thursday, Catching Fire and Frozen, propelling The Hunger Games: Catching Fire to $14.9 million at the domestic box office. That beats previous record holder Toy Story 2 to set a new record for Thanksgiving day box office.

That's after a massive pre-Thanksgiving Wednesday take of $20.7 million. Before that, the biggest pre-Thanksgiving day Wednesday was for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part I, which earned $14.4 million just before Thanksgiving.

Lionsgate’s blockbuster sequel has now grossed $222 million in North America since opening last week. It has earned an estimated $423 million globally and opened in 16 more foreign markets this week.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is on pace to earn a massive $100 million over the holiday weekend. If tracking holds, that would be a new record for the Thanksgiving holiday period, besting the previous record set by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 2001.

Box Office: 'Catching Fire' Breaks November Record

Catching Fire burned up the weekend box office, pulling in an estimated $161.1 million. That gross beats the $152.5 million opening of The Hunger Games, which opened in March 2012, and it stands as the best November debut of all time ahead of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which bowed with $142.9 million in 2009.

According to EW.com, only three films have ever opened higher than Catching Fire: The Avengers ($207.4 million), Iron Man 3 ($174.1 million), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($169.2 million). Many odds-makers thought Catching Fire might surpass Iron Man 3‘s opening earlier this year, but the superhero sequel had the notable advantage of 3-D ticket sales, and Catching Fire fell short. Still, if estimates hold up when final grosses are released tomorrow, Catching Fire will have bested The Dark Knight Rises as the highest 2-D opener of all time. Rises pulled in $160.9 million during its opening weekend in 2012. Even without 3-D appeal, Catching Fire played very well on IMAX screens. The large-screen format accounted for $12.6 million of its domestic debut.

Catching Fire played to audiences in all four quadrants. Crowds over 25 and under 25 were evenly split, and although the film had more female viewers than males (59 percent vs. 41 percent), more men turned out on opening weekend than for the original Hunger Games. Females made up 61 percent of that film’s opening weekend audience. The passionate moviegoers who saw the film this weekend awarded the film an enthusiastic “A” CinemaScore grade, which will yield great word-of-mouth as the film enters the lucrative Thanksgiving period next weekend. It seems likely that holiday business will help Catching Fire surpass The Hunger Games $408 million domestic total, but we’ll have to wait and see whether that actually happens.

Internationally, Catching Fire is already doing double the numbers of The Hunger Games, which pulled in $283.2 million overseas for a $659.2 million worldwide total. Catching Fire grossed $146.6 million overseas in its first weekend from 63 territories, giving it a dazzling $307.7 million worldwide opening weekend. That’s up 45 percent from The Hunger Games $211.8 million global debut — a whopping $152.5 million of which came from the U.S. and Canada.

Box Office: 'Catching Fire' Ablaze Friday With $70.5 Million

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is set to score the top November opening of all time:

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire topped the Friday box office with a historic $70.5 million, one of the biggest opening-day grosses of all time in North America and putting the sequel back on course to match the $152.5 million earned by the first film in March 2012.

Catching Fire is also destined to score the top November opening of all time, eclipsing the $142.8 million earned by fellow YA film adaptation The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The movie, earning an A CinemaScore, marks another major victory for Lionsgate and is reaching a broader audience than Hunger Games did, with males making up 12 percent more of the audience.

Overseas, where it is rolling out in 65 markets, Catching Fire has already earned a stellar $64 million. The movie is doing double the business of Hunger Games overall, and is four times larger in Germany and nearly 40 percent bigger in Australia.

In 2012, Hunger Games topped out at $408 million domestically and $283.2 million internationally for a global total of $691.2 million; Catching Fire is expected to do substantially more. By Sunday alone, the movie could cross $300 million in global ticket sales.
